Cụm tính từ trong tiếng Anh

Cụm tính từ, một số giáo trình gọi là “Ngữ tính từ” (adjective phrase); là cụm từ có các chức năng của một tính từ, xem thêm chức năng của tính từ.

Ví dụ:

• The women in the seminar room is from Malaysia, her name is Lily, an auditor.
• They were quite unaware of any wrong-doing

HEAD WORD

“head word” của một ngữ tính từ (AP) là một tính từ. “The head” là cấu trúc cơ bản nhất của ngữ tính từ.
– Very enthusiastic about his latest idea

SPECIFIER + HEAD + COMPLEMENT

– Một ngữ tính từ thường gồm một từ đơn đó là một tính từ nhưng ngữ tính từ cũng có thể có cấu trúc phức tạp hơn: Specifier + head + complement (Adjective can be pre-modified by a specifier/ intensifier or post-modified by a complement)

Pre-modification: specifier/ intensifier

Cụm tính từ được bổ nghĩa bổi một trạng từ.

• Các trạng từ chỉ cường độ “intensifying” như: very, quite, somewhat, rather, extremely, fairly, highly…
• Các trạng từ khác như: Beautiful cool, annoying simple, disgusting rich, incredibly slow…

Post-modification

Đây là thành phần bổ ngữ của tính từ. Có 3 loại:

• Prepositional phrase: very anxious about Nhan’s health (=worried about something/somebody, nervous of something /doing something).
• Infinitive clause: very anxious to please every body (“to please every body” là infinitive clause)
• That-clause: very anxious that no-one should accuse him of laziness. (đoạn mầu xanh là mệnh đề “that”)

Chú ý: Tùy loại tính từ mà có các loại bổ ngữ có thể đi sau nó

• Nhiều tính từ không có bổ ngữ theo sau: Big, blue, astute (sắc xảo, tinh khôn), sudden, tall.
• Một số chỉ có một hoặc hai loại bổ ngữ theo sau: this book is interesting to read (“to read” là một infinitive clause ) but : “is interesting enough…” is also possible
• Tính từ “attentive” chỉ có cụm giới từ đi sau nó: The audience was attentive to the speaker
• Với tính từ “safe” có thể theo sau là một cụm giới từ hoặc mệnh đề infinitive clause: This toy is safe for children/This tree is safe to climb up.
• “ Aware” ( always with a PP with “of” ): He was aware of a creaking noise

• Impertinent question (Head alone )
• Very beautiful girl ( intensifier + head )
• Unaware of any wrong-doing (head + complement )
• Unaware that every one has confessed ( head + complement)
• Afraid to make any more (Head + complement )
