Cụm phân từ hình thành từ mệnh đề trạng ngữ chỉ thời gian

Mệnh đề trạng ngữ được giới thiệu bởi các từ nối như (after, while, when, before, since , as) có thể được rút gọn làm thành cụm phân từ (participial phrases) nếu chủ ngữ của mệnh đề trạng ngữ và mệnh đề độc lập là một.

Nguyên tắc chuyển một mệnh đề trạng ngữ chỉ thời gian sang cụm phân từ (participial phrase)

1. Chủ ngữ của mệnh đề trạng ngữ và mệnh đề độc lập (mệnh đề chính) phải là một (Quan trọng*)
2. Chuyển chủ ngữ sang mệnh đề độc lập
3. Thay đổi verb form
4. Xoá hoặc giữ lại từ nối (subordinator) theo các quy tắc sau:

• “before” và “since” phải được giữ nguyên
• “as” phải được xoá bỏ.
• “after, while, when” phải được giữ nguyên nếu cụm phân từ (participial phrase) theo sau mệnh đề độc lập nếu không thì chúng phải được xoá bỏ.

Các vị trí của participial phrases (khi hình thành từ mệnh đề trạng ngữ)

Một cụm phân từ (Participial phrase) được hình thành từ mệnh đề trạng ngữ có thể xuất hiện ở các vị trí khác nhau trong câu.

Nếu participial đứng trước mệnh đề độc lập thì phải có dấu phẩy theo sau cùng để ngăn cách mệnh đề độc lập.

Nếu participial đứng sau mệnh đề độc lập thì không cần thiết có dấu phẩy để ngăn cách giữa chúng. Từ nối luôn được giữ ại.

Chúng ta cũng có thể đặt participial phrase ngay sau cụm danh từ làm chủ ngữ(subject noun phrase).

Ở vị trí này, participial phrase được hình thành từ mệnh đề tính ngữ và được tách biệt với mệnh đề độc lập bằng dấu phẩy và tuân theo quy tắc giữ hoặc lược bỏ từ nối như đã giải thích ở phần trên.

Chú ý vị trí của participial phrases trong các câu sau:

1. While the president was traveling in Europe, he met many important political leaders (Mệnh đề)

• While traveling in Europe, the president met many important political leaders.
• Traveling in Europe, the president met many important political leaders
• The president met many important political leaders while traveling in Europe. (Mệnh đề độc lập (mầu xanh) đứng trước participial phrase “while traveling in Europe”. Do đó không có dấu phẩy)
• The president, while traveling in Europe, met many important political leaders (trường hợp participial phrase theo sau cụm danh từ chủ ngữ “The president”)
• The president, traveling in Europe, met many important political leaders. (trường hợp participial phrase theo sau cụm danh từ chủ ngữ “The president”)

2. After the president had visited Europe, he flew on to the Middle East (Mệnh đề)

• > After having visited Europe, the president flew on to the Middle East

(Có thể viết: “After visiting Europe, the president flew on to the Middle East”. The general form of the participle is possible here as long as the time subordinator “after” is retained. Because “after” already indicates the correct time relationship, the perfect participle is not needed.)

• Having visited Europe, the president flew on to the Middle East.
• > The president flew on to the Middle East after having visited Europe

3. When the president’s plane landed in Cairo, it lost a wheel and almost crashed.

• When landing in Cairo, the president’s plane lost a wheel and almost crashed.
• Landing in Cairo, the president’s plane lost a wheel and almost crashed.
• > The president’s plane lost a wheel and almost crashed when landing in Cairo

4. As the first Lady was stepping off the plane, she stumbled and almost fell.

• Stepping off the plane, the first Lady stumbled and almost fell
• > The first Lady stumbled and almost fell stepping off the plane (Chú ý: Từ nối “as” phải được lược bỏ ngay cả khi participial phrase đứng sau mệnh đề độc lập).

5. Before they were driven away in a limousine, the president and his wife were greeted by a group of government officials.

• Before being driven away in a limousine, the president and his wife were greeted by a group of government officials.
• (Chú ý: The continuous forms of the participle seem to be preferred when it is derived from a passive verb in time clause. Additional examples: After I was asked = after being asked; before they were served = before being served.)
• > The president and his wife were greeted by a group of government officials before being driven away in a limousine./
