Câu ghép tiếng Anh – Compound sentences

Tiếp theo bài này chúng ta sẽ học về câu ghép trong tiếng Anh – compound sentence. Câu ghép trong tiếng Anh được cấu thành bởi hai hay nhiều mệnh đề độc lập nối với nhau bởi từ nối như : and, or, nor, but, for, so, yet …

Mỗi một mệnh đề trong một câu ghép phải có đầy đủ một chủ ngữ và một động từ và mỗi mệnh đề có thể đứng độc lập. Trong cấu ghép, các mệnh đề được tách nhau bằng đặt dấu phẩy đằng trước từ nối.

Cấu trúc câu ghép dạng 1

 Independent clause, + coordinating conjunction + Independent clause 

Xem xét các ví dụ dưới đây:

– George has applied for a scholarship, and Daniel has requested financial aid (additional idea related to first idea)

– Students may live in the dormitories, or they may live in off-campus housing (choice of two possibilities)

– Phuong has completed two math courses, but she must still take calculus (contrast with the first clause)

– Nam completed his homework early, so he decided to go to the party (result of the first clause)

– Foreign students in Vietnam must take Vietnamese classes, for they must be able to communicate easily in speaking and writing (reason for the first clause)

– I have taken two finals, yet must take two more this week (contrast to the first clause)

– Many students do not like to study for test, nor do they like to write term papers (negative choice in both clause)

Các mệnh đề độc lập của câu ghép có thể được nối bởi một từ nối gọi là “sentence connector” ví dụ: furthermore, however, otherwise, and therefore. 

Các từ nối này được dùng một cách thường xuyên trong văn viết để nối các mệnh đề dài hơn.

Trường hợp này ta dùng dấu chấm phẩy  “;” sau mệnh đề thứ nhất và dấu phẩy “,” ngay sau từ nối.

Cấu trúc câu ghép dạng 2

Independent clause; + sentence connector, + independent clause

Từ nối có chức năng nối các ý của 2 mệnh đề độc lập trong câu ghép, thể hiện sự biểu đạt logic giữa ý của mệnh đề thứ nhất với ý của mệnh đề thứ hai.

Xét các ví dụ dưới đây:

– Some people are using bicycles for transportation; furthermore, others are joining carpools or taking vehicles to get to their destinations

– Juniors colleges offer preparation for the professions, business, and industry; moreover, students may prepare for transfer to a university or college. 

– You can receive individual guidance from counselor; therefore, you should take advantage of this service./
