Cấu trúc thì quá khứ hoàn thành

Khẳng định: S + had + Vpt2 + O

  • The boy had finished his homework before he went to bed last night

Phủ định: S + had + not + Vpt2 + O

  • I hadn’t finished my homework just before the deadline last Thursday

Nghi vấn:

Cấu trúc Yes/No: Had (not) + S + V3 + O?

Cấu trúc Wh-question: Wh + had + S + V3 + O?

  • Had the film ended when you arrived at the cinema?
  • Had she left when we went to bed?
  • Yes, she had./ No, she hadn’t.
  • Had your laptop disappeared by the time you woke up?
  • Yes, it had./ No, it hadn’t

Cách dùng thì quá khứ hoàn thành

a. Diễn tả một hành động hoàn thành trước một thời điểm cụ thể nào đó trong quá khứ

– When I came back to see him, he had got married to another girl

– When I came he had gone out

– He had already walked to school before I could offer him a ride

b. Dùng trong mệnh đề phụ, câu điều kiện loại 3

– If Lan had studied harder, she would have passed the exam (Điều kiện loại 3)

c. Diễn tả độ dài, thời gian của hành động tính từ thời điểm bắt đầu kéo dài đến một thời điểm cụ thể trong quá khứ

– By this time last year, they had learned English for 16 years

Dấu hiệu thì quá khứ hoàn thành

Dấu hiệu nhận biết của thì quá khứ hoàn thành thông qua các từ như: before, after, until, by the time, when by, for, as soon as, by the end of + time in past,…

Ví dụ:

  • Before I went to work, my mother cooked lunch for me (Trước khi tôi đi làm, mẹ tôi đã nấu bữa trưa cho tôi).
  • My girlfriend hadn’t recognized me until I took off my mask (Bạn giá tôi đã không nhận ra tôi cho đến khi tôi cởi khẩu trang ra).

Bài 1. Chia động từ cho sẵn theo dạng đúng thì quá khứ hoàn thành

  • When David came, everybody (leave).
  • He (already/watch) the movie, so he wouldn’t want to see it atopgain.
  • My kids didn’t eat anything at the party because they (eat) dinner at home.
  • The motorbike burned just after it (crash) into the tree.
  • John (not/complete) his homework by the deadline, so he called his teacher to tell that he would submit it late.
  • She didn’t cry because she (know) the truth.
